Technical reports

prof helmut mengelIn September, Professor Helmut Menzel from Germany came to Radio Lumiere to assist for two weeks with training and updates to the studios.  Prof. Menzel taught training seminars for the Radio Lumiere staff on subjects such as Recording Technique, Microphone Selection and Use, Studio Acoustics, and
Digital Recording.  Prof. Menzel used his many years of experience in studio design to evaluate the studios at Cote Plage and will be making plans to improve the acoustic performance of those studios.

In September and October, Engineers Ted Miller and Jack Kinney, from the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Indiana, USA, visited Radio Lumiere for two weeks of work in the studios at Cote Plage. Ted and Jack are missionary engineers who help radio stations around the world deal with technical
problems. They came to work on problems at the studio, and to start preparingfor processing sound on computers, the future in broadcasting.ted and jack
* They worked on the system for getting telephone calls on the air, which will eventually simplify that process for the operators, and make it a more natural experience for the person calling in.
* They replaced some worn out modules on the control board that the operators use.
* They worked on putting together the foundation that will support digital audio storage for Radio Lumiere
* They worked in the production studio to eliminate problems where older
and newer wiring met
* They installed equipment which will allow the Production Studio to be connected to the transmitter, in case of problems with the main On-Air Studio.
* They provided a simpler way to put Voice of America newscasts on the air.
* They continue to update the records of which of the several hundred wires in the radio station have what traveling inside of them, from where and to where.

Eng. Miller and Prof. Menzel expect to return to continue working on the project.
